Automated Proctoring with Browser monitoring

Automated Proctoring with Browser monitoring

Browser monitoring is the default feature of ClassMarker Monitor, our integrated cheat prevention system. It automatically detects and logs test-takers’ actions during an online test, such as tab switching or loss of focus.

What is tracked and logged

How to enable Browser monitoring

  1. Create a Test
  2. Assign your Test
  3. ClassMarker Monitor is located at the bottom of the test settings page
  4. Enable Browser monitoring
  5. Save

You have the option to enable Camera Monitoring, which is covered on the next page.

Automated Proctoring Settings

How it works during the Test

  1. Users see instructions before the Test (these can be customized).
  2. The test opens in full-screen mode.
  3. If a user’s mouse or browser focus leaves the test window, an event is recorded.
  4. A warning pop-up appears whenever an event is triggered.
  5. All recorded events are available to administrators in the user’s results.

Flagging system

ClassMarker strives to ensure fairness for all test takers. Our algorithm includes a built-in margin of error that allows up to 5 seconds away from the test and a maximum of two ‘left’ events. This provides some flexibility for minor mistakes early on.

Here is the scale we use:

No events
No flagged events icon No flag
2 events or less
Less than 5 seconds away
0 camera events
No flagged events icon Within margin of error
No flag but events are
visible in results
3 events or more
5 seconds away or more
1 camera event or more
Flagged events icon Flag

Does a Flag or multiple events always mean that the user cheated?

No. It is ultimately up to the administrator to decide what constitutes cheating. Each administrator may have their own rules and restrictions.

ClassMarker Monitor usage recommendations

  1. Do not turn on Monitoring for open book exams or practice exams where Test takers are allow to research answers.
  2. Do not add links to external websites or assets, which will cause a "Left Test" event.
